Alpha Betty and Friends
Grades K - 2

Alpha Betty
Students join Alpha Betty and her friends as they follow puzzle paths to the playground. Once on the playground, students review early learning skills for each activity they have completed. Program options allow teachers to adjust difficulty levels.
Betty's friends include Pattern Patty, Counting Connie, Lester Less Than, Even Steven, Number Nellie, Add Brad, and Subtraction Jackson. Alpha Betty and her friends each help children master a different early learning skill.

Program Options: For Alpha Betty select uppercase or lowercase letters. A difficulty level option for Betty and several of her friends relates to the complexity of the path, not the difficulty of the content. Difficulty Level 2 will simply have a couple of "dead ends" that children will need to look ahead for when finding the right path to the playground. For Pattern Patty, options allow you to specify patterns which repeat after 2, 3, 4, or 5 steps. You also may create patterns using color only, shape only, or color and shape. For Counting Connie, set options to provide practice in counting by ones (to 20 or 100), twos, fives, or tens. For Lester Less Than, select 2-digit or 3-digit numbers. For Even Steven, have students work with 1, 2, or 3-digit numbers. Set Number Nellie to focus on Addition Facts, Subtraction Facts, or both. Basic fact practice can be specified for facts to 5, to 10, or to 18. You may also set Add Brad and Subtraction Jackson to provide practice of facts to 5, to 10, or to 18.

Options and Easy Track: Set activity options for the whole class all at once or for any selected group or individual.


Alpha Betty
Students join Alpha Betty and her friends as they follow puzzle paths to the playground. Each friend exercises a different early learning skill. Program options allow teachers to adjust difficulty levels. Children earn stars for completing each activity and have fun with Betty and her friends when they reach the playground.

Children take the folloWing paths to the playground:
  • Alpha Betty hops from A to Z (upper or lower case).
  • Pattern Patty and her dog follow patterns of shapes.
  • Counting Connie jumps rope counting by 1's, 2's, 5's, or 10's.
  • Lester Less Than skateboards, moving always to smaller numbers.
  • Even Steven strolls on squares with even numbers.
  • Number Nellie cartwheels on a family of addition or subtraction facts.
  • Add Brad solves addition facts to 5 or to 10.
  • Subtraction Jackson solves basic subtraction facts to 5 or to 10.

    The student moves Alpha Betty or one of her friends from the starting position at the lower left of the screen to the playground area at the upper right. Each activity offers a different challenge in crossing the screen. Once at the playground, the student may use the number keys or mouse to see Alpha Betty and her friends at play.

    Program options allow the teacher to vary the difficulty or content of each activity in accordance with individual student needs. Increasing the difficulty level of some activities makes it harder to find the correct path to the playground. This encourages the beginning student to solve problems through strategic thinking. Program options vary the content of activities as well.

    Alpha Betty and Friends is easy for young children to understand and operate. Most of the time just the Space Bar and Enter or return key are used. Or, children may be introduced to using a mouse since the mouse is active as an optional input device throughout the program. Use of number keys is required only with Add Brad and Subtraction Jackson.

    Clarity of design, simple operation, varied tasks within a consistent structure, teacher options which tailor program challenges to student readiness, and a colorful cast of animated characters who keep students involved are all valuable features of Alpha Betty and Friends.
