"Brain
Builder, Brain Builder 3.0"

| Description |
BrainBuilder is a "neurobic", computer-based
training program that is designed to assess and build auditory and visual sequential
processing abilities. With as little as ten minutes of daily mental exercise
powerful gains can be made in short-term memory and thinking skills. In an intensive
series of adaptive, interactive exercises, BrainBuilder trains the brain to
expand its ability to sequentially process auditory and visual information.
Sequential processing is fundamental to all learning activities, communication,
social interaction and higher order cognitive functions.
The program consists of seven activities. Three
focus on auditory processing, three on visual processing, and one on attention
and cognitive processing speed. A baseline level is established in each of the
activities, then the program moves you to more challenging levels of training.
Results from the activities are analyzed by session and compared with your progress
to date and may be viewed in reports and graphs.
Recommended use of BrainBuilder is one to two
10-minute training sessions a day, five days per week. BrainBuilder is available
for home use and in site licenses for schools, clinics and business settings.

| Overview |
Realize significant, lasting changes in auditory
and visual sequential processing skills and short-term memory. Psychologists
and educators call it "sequential processing" It is essential to every mental
process, including every level of verbal communication. Better sequential processing
enables us to take in more of what there is to see and hear. It determines how
quickly and clearly we can grasp concepts with 3, 5, or 7 components. And it
determines how effectively we can express ourselves to others. If sequential
processing capacity is limited, it's a little like not having enough RAM in
your computer. Some things work just fine. Others work, but s-l-o-w-l-y, or
more crudely. And certain things become impossible, resulting in frustration.
Use brain-building methods proven effective
over a 30-year period on over 20,000 children and adults. The human brain has
unlimited potential! With just ten minutes playtime per day you can build your
brain's neural network to boost your ability to absorb and process information.
See the difference in school, in the office, in social settings and throughout
you life. BrainBuilder is not a method for compensating for mental inefficiency
but a tool for strengthening core mental capacities.
BrainBuilder's seven neurodevelopment exercises
are tuned to the precise frequency, intensity, and duration that best stimulates
higher brain function, open's the mind and trains it to learn more effectively.
The opening warm up activity is a sustained
attention exercise that creates focus so the individual can be helped to control
impulsivity and remain focused on the six core sequential processing activities.
The other six are an intensive series of adaptive, interactive exercises that
train sequential processing functions. These exercises involve seeing or hearing,
and then recalling, a series of numbers. This skill is often measured by standardized
tests, where it is called "digit span."
In BrainBuilder, digit span is not just tested,
but exercised. The activities have been shown to build sequential processing
capacities in people at all levels. With regular use of BrainBuilder, you can
gradually increase the number or "span" of digits, or numbers, that you can
store and retrieve. This increases your immediate, working and short-term memory
capacity. By doing these exercises, you increase the amount of information that
you can take in sequentially, hold, process, and recall. Better memory is just
the first level of benefit you will notice. Building digit span means increasing
the number of abstractions you can keep in mind when understanding and processing
language, and the ability to think sequentially in any life situation. If you
can grasp the relationship of more factors that are interacting in a given situation
you may be able to solve problems successfully that would otherwise be too complex
to comprehend.
What kind of intelligence will the 21st Century
require? The rate at which we need to process information in today's high-speed,
information-packed, constantly changing competitive environment can be overwhelming.
Making matters worse, many children and adults must work unusually hard to do
normal tasks, due to processing inefficiencies.
The principle behind BrainBuilder is exercise.
The more you exercise you brain's fundamental processing capacities, the stronger,
more efficient and more organized they become. As the pathways of you neural
network proliferate and deepen, so too will your ability to absorb and process
information quickly and easily.
The result is clearer, quicker thinking, less
confusion and better communication. You'll have less need to reread information
or hear it repeated. You'll respond faster, more accurately to real-life or
academic problems. Naturally, this means less stress and higher self-esteem,
with greater satisfaction and all-around success in life.

| Activities |
Here you will find a brief description of each
of the seven BrainBuilder activities. These activities form the backbone of
BrainBuilder; it is by using these activities on a regular basis that you can
make the greatest strides in improving your mental capacity.
The sequential processing activities all present
sequences of digits presented in various ways either to the visual or auditory
system. The program uses a sophisticated random number generator to ensure that
number sequences are not repeated so the brain does not lock into a previously
recognized pattern. The auditory activities are unique in that when the digits
are presented, a different acoustic voice is used with each sequence presentation.
This is so the ear and brain can tune in to voices with different pitches and
tonal qualities in the sound spectrum. Each activity also involves a valuable
motor component since answers are entered into the computer either using the
computer mouse or the keyboard. |
Intensity Activity
The Intensity Activity is an exercise
of sustained attention. Designed to get your brain into the sharper focus
required to master, the BrainBuilder activities. This exercise should
be used every time you begin a new session. It helps to wake you up and
raise your level of attention. In the Intensity Activity, an eye is flashed
on the screen for a fraction of a second. You should hit the spacebar
as fast as possible if the eye is open; your score is the number of milliseconds
between the time the eye is displayed and the moment when you press the
spacebar. However, if the eye is closed, you should not hit the spacebar
at all; doing so results in a penalty. In other words, the idea is to
respond as quickly as possible, pressing the spacebar as soon as the open
eye appears, and not touching the spacebar when the closed eye appears. |

Visual Base
The Visual Base Activity exercises immediate and
short-term visual memory and conceptualization skills. Although simple
in design and function, this activity is one of the most important.
The computer produces a random number, and after displaying it for a
short time, erases it and prompts you to enter the number in the correct
sequence. The length of the number depends on the level of your advancement;
you might start out mastering four - or five - digit numbers, and eventually
progress to nine or ten.
|
|
Visual Reverse The Visual Reverse Activity exercises immediate,
working and short-term visual memory, visualization and conceptualization
skills. This activity is virtually identical to the Visual Flash Activity,
with the singular difference that the digits must be entered in reverse
order. In other words, the numerals in the sequence are displayed one
at a time in the box at the top of the screen, and then must be entered
together in reverse order. For example, if the sequence 1-2-0-9-7-4
is displayed (one number at a time), you should enter 4-7-9-0-2-1. Like
the Visual Flash Activity, this activity offers presentation speed selections. |
|
|
|
Visual Flash
The Visual Flash Activity exercises immediate, working
and short-term visual memory, visualization and conceptualization skills.
Much like the Visual Base Activity, this activity displays a set of
numerals that once the presentation is complete, must be entered in
the same order as they were given. However, they are displayed one at
a time, and then must be entered together in the correct sequence. The
length of the number (how many digits it is composed of) is determined
by your current level. This activity offers different selections for
the speed at which the numbers are displayed.

Auditory Base The Auditory Base Activity exercises immediate and
short-term auditory memory and conceptualization skills. In this activity,
a random sequence of digits is presented by one of eight different voices
in regularly timed one-second intervals. After the sequence is given
you are prompted to enter in the numerals in the correct sequence. |
|
|
|
Auditory Reverse
The Auditory Reverse Activity exercises immediate,
working and short-term auditory memory, visualization and conceptualization
skills. As in the Auditory Base Activity, a random sequence is presented
by one of eight different voices, which changes throughout the activity.
After the sequence is given, you should enter it in the reverse order
of how it was read. For example, if the sequence given is 0-5-1-1-9-9,
you should enter 9-9-1-1-5-0.
|
|
Auditory Random The Auditory Random Activity exercises immediate,
working and short-term auditory memory, visualization and conceptualization
skills. This activity is identical to the Auditory Base Activity with
the exception that random pauses are inserted in the presentation of
the numerals. For example, in the Auditory Base Activity, the given
sequence might be 0-5-1-2, while in the Auditory Random Activity it
would be 0-5---1-2. However, the pauses don't affect how you should
enter the sequence; the numerals should be entered in the same order
in which they are read. |
